Course Platform Fees: What Creators Really Pay Per Year

Hosted course platforms advertise a monthly price and earn from everything around it: transaction percentages, per-student pricing tiers, paid add-ons for features you assumed were included. None of this is hidden, but almost nobody sums it before signing. Here is how to run that math.

The three fee layers

Layer one is the subscription itself, which climbs as your student count crosses tier thresholds. Layer two is transaction fees: many plans take a percentage of every sale on top of standard card processing. Layer three is the upgrade wall: advanced quizzes, certificates, API access, or removing the platform's branding each push you up a plan.

A worked example

Take a creator selling a $200 course to 60 students a month on a mid-tier plan: the annual subscription is four figures, and a 5% platform cut on $144,000 of sales is another $7,200, every year, growing with revenue. By year three, the platform has cost more than building your own, and you still cannot export the experience you built.

The percentage model means your costs scale with your success. That is exactly backwards: your best months are the ones where the platform takes the most.

When renting still makes sense, and when it stops

Under roughly $3,000 of monthly course revenue, hosted platforms are the right call: validation beats ownership. The inflection point comes when the annual platform bill approaches the one-time cost of a custom build. Past it, every renewed year is money spent renting what you could own, with your conversion funnel, data, and roadmap in someone else's hands.

The takeaway

Sum all three fee layers over a three-year horizon before choosing a platform. If the total approaches the cost of a custom build, renting has become the expensive option, and the cut of every future sale is the price of not deciding.
